Planning The Perfect European Road Trip
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past three years, it’s fair to say that you’ve probably heard about Brexit. The latest extension in the divorce between the EU and UK is designed to solve the remaining issues, namely whether the UK exits with a deal or without a deal, or whether the UK exits at all.
Needless to say, the divorce is not only going to affect EU/UK travelers but also travelers from the rest of the world who are keen to plan a holiday in Europe. For anybody who loves road trips, and especially road trips throughout Europe, Brexit poses a real threat. What will the post-Brexit road trip look like?
Find car insurance with the appropriate coverage
First of all, it’s fair to say that regardless of what happens, you need to find car insurance that can cover your vehicle in Europe. It’s a good idea to check online for the best offer for your needs – you can use an aggregator such as Esurance auto quote to compare costs based on your criteria. Typically, your car insurance can also provide a recovery service – at an additional cost. Make sure that the recovery service can sort you out wherever you are in the world. Remember that Brexit doesn’t only affect the UK relationship to the EU, but also the ties to countries that hold agreements with the EU.
Nobody knows what happens with driving permits
Currently, there is no certainty regarding driving licenses. If a deal can be passed, it’s fair to expect EU and UK driver rights to remain unchanged for local citizens. Travelers who don’t drive with an EU license will need to apply for a permit to drive through the EU. You will also need an IDP – International Driving Permit – to drive in Europe. In the absence of a deal, it is currently impossible to know whether US travelers will require any additional permits to drive through the UK.

I did not know that you had to apply for a permit to drive through Europe I guess that makes sense after seeing European Vacation, lol. I know when I stayed in London with my family we had a rental car but it was done through the production company so I did not have to apply myself they took care of it for me.

I was wondering if UK and EU driver rights would remain same or not but good to know that it’ll remain unchanged for road trips.

Great tips for travel during this upheaval. Many years ago there was an international driving permit you could get for travel in Europe. Would make sense we still need something like that.
